- STANLEY 3/8 inch Ratchet
A ratchet is a mechanical device that allows continuous linear or rotary motion in only one direction while preventing motion in the opposite direction. It typically consists of a gear wheel or linear rack with evenly spaced teeth, and a pivoting pawl that engages with these teeth. When force is applied in the permitted direction, the pawl slides over the teeth, allowing the wheel or rack to move smoothly. However, when the force is applied in the opposite direction, the pawl catches on the teeth, preventing movement in that direction. Ratchets are commonly used in tools such as socket wrenches, where they allow for easy tightening or loosening of bolts and nuts without the need to reposition the tool.
